Geared potentiometers
Today, potentiometric angle of rotation transducers are becoming increasingly important in analog measurement technology for high-quality industrial measurement tasks thanks to their favorable price-performance ratio.
Structure and function of geared potentiometers
A geared potentiometer basically consists of two components. Firstly, the measuring gear with precision gears. The second is an electrical resistance component whose resistance value can be changed mechanically by turning. The gearbox and potentiometer are assembled in the factory with low backlash. The integrated slipping clutch in multi-coil potentiometers serves as protection against overrunning stops. As a result, geared potentiometer provides an ohmic output signal that is proportional to the number of revolutions.
Applications of geared potentiometers
Multi-coil hybrid potentiometers are particularly suitable for applications with a long service life and low signal noise, e.g., as position sensors in bearing control loops of dancer potentiometers in machines for paper processing, textile machines, slewing gears and hoists of crane systems and excavator systems as well as actuators of power plants and chemical plants. The geared potentiometers equipped with wire or plastic resistor elements provide current or voltage signals of 4 - 20 mA and 0 - 10 V with optional integrated analog R/I or R/U measuring transducers. All transmitters have trimmers with which the output signal can be adapted to the respective angular deflection of the encoder. Oil-filled potentiometers are available with IP65 or IP68 protection for measuring points in extremely dirty or damp environments.
The right measuring device for every application
Our incremental rotary encoders are better suited for endless rotary movements, such as speed measurement or non-contact measurement tasks, in the event of strong shocks or vibrations. Digitally communicating position sensors and angle of rotation sensors are available in the absolute rotary encoder range. The measurement displays in the electronic measurement displays area round off the product line.
